The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has decried the continuous carriage of containers by flatbed trailers without proper latching on the highways, and has therefore ordered the immediate impoundment of such vehicles by patrol teams anytime they are sighted
Oyeyemi, who gave the order in a press statement by the Corps Pubic Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, added that the Corps, in a bid to get such dangerous trailers off the road, has cemented partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, to ensure that such vehicles are not allowed to leave the Ports in the first instance, unless full compliance with latching and other maximum safety standards are observed.
Oyeyemi said that apart from the dangers to lives and properties that the unlatched containers posed, they cal also easily lead to unnecessary road obstruction when they fall and cause undue hardship to motorists who will have much of their traveling time wasted on the road before the obstruction is cleared.
He therefore directed operatives of the Corps to be on red alert and impound at sight any such trailers in order to avert road carnage and inconvenience of road users.
He also revealed that the Corps aims to achieve this in friendly collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.
He therefore appealed to the public to take advantage of the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM or the toll free 122 numbers to report any of such trailers seen on the highways without proper latching of containers.
The numbers to call at all times to reach National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM, according to Oyeyemi, are: 09067000015 and 0805 299 8090.
