The 15-man side of the 30 man Taraba Peace on Wednesday, January 22, urged the Wukari Local Government council and the Wukari Traditional Council to facilitate the return of all displaced Tiv people to their ancestral homes.
At a press briefing in Jalingo, the spokesperson of the committee, Barr. Jime Yongo, called on both the Wukari Local Government council and Wukari Traditional Council to emulate Donga and Takum local government areas, which had since ensure the return of the displaced people to their homes.
Yongo said that the peace committee was instrumental for the cessation of hostilities and the dismantling of all illegal road blocks during the Tiv/Jukun crisis in the southern part of the state.
He said, “Before the committee was put in place, the security situation in Southern Taraba had deteriorated. But following the intensive work of the committee, road blocks in the area were dismantled and both Tiv and Jukun tribes are moving freely on the roads.
“Markets have being opened in Takum and Donga and both Tiv and Jukun go to the same markets. Unfortunately, the situation in Wukari is not good, as the displaced Tiv people have not been allowed to return to their ancestral homes.
“We are hereby appealing to the Wukari Local Covernment council, traditional rulers and all stakeholders to emulate their brothers from Donga and Takum to facilitate the return of all displaced people to their homes to pursue their normal activities.”
