The Cross-River state Commissioner for Education, Sen Stephen Odey has assured stakeholders of education sector in Itigidi community, Abi LGA, Cross River state of the government’s willingness to upgrade public school facilities in the area.

The commissioner made the promise when a delegation of education stakeholders from Itigidi community paid him a courtesy visit in his office, Tuesday in Calabar.

Odey, while welcoming the delegation, stated that government understands their challenges, assuring them that the challenges raised will be addressed in the nearest future.

The commissioner solicited the cooperation of the stakeholders for the Otu’s led government to succeed.

He assured them of the administration’s commitment to revamp the state education sector for it to compete globally, according to International best practices.

Odey expressed his willingness to formulate policies and programmes that will consolidate on the gains of the Otu’s administration.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Prof. Ernest Asikong, appealed for the posting of more teachers in the areas of mathematics and chemistry which the stakeholders said were lacking to coach their wards, adding that availability of qualified teachers in these subjects would enable their wards excel in their educational pursuits, especially the SSCE Examinations.

The group further requested for the capturing of College of nursing/midwifery and public sciences under the state Ministry of Education, for TETFUND’s intervention.

Also outlined for considerations were the rehabilitation of lodge / guess house and construction of more classrooms block and staff quarters so that corp members posted to the college can have where to stay.

She nevertheless made a case for the installation of solar powered pump that can serve as substitute to generating plant to pump water since petroleum products have become expensive.

Other areas requiring intervention, according to the group, include the upgrade of UBEC Model secondary school from junior to senior secondary school as it already have an approved center for SSCE Examinations, the provision of laboratory equipment, and access road to UBEC model secondary school in Itigidi.
