The Oyo State government today embarked on total removal of all illegal structures, shanties and shops around its public schools in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Abdulmojeed Mogbojubola, who led the management and officers of the ministry, ensured that total demolition of the unauthorised constructions, were carried out.

Recall that in the previous week, the executive governor of the state, Engineer Seyi Makinde, during a night tour discovered the appalling myriads of shanties, slums and illegal shops around public schools premises, capable of causing undue distractions to pupils and students in the state

The state government consequently gave a seven-day ultimatum, via letters and media reports.

Mr Abdulmojeed Mogbojubola, who had earlier visited and spoken with some of the illegal shop owners, and residents, strictly warned against reconstruction of the shanties.

He assured of Governor Seyi Makinde’s enduring love and commitment towards making the environment of public schools clean, attractive and conducive for learning, especially, as students resume new academic session.

School premises where the exercises were carried out include: Oba Akinbiyi Model College, Ibadan, C&S New Eden Primary School, Mokola, Saint Gabriel’s Secondary Commercial School, Mokola, Ibadan among a host of others.

The commissioner however, commended some of the owners of the shanties and shops for toeing the part of honour by complying with government’s directive on the removal notifications, before the arrival of the team.
