The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, has celebrated Guidance Counsellors across public primary schools in the Lagos State.

The celebration was the main side attraction at LASUBEB’s 2020 Guidance and Counsellors end-of-the-year party.

Delivering her address at the event, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mrs Abosede Adelaja, applauded the counsellors for their relentless efforts in helping the pupils stay safe and sane, and assisting them in reaching their maximum potentials.

Explaining that the annual event is used to celebrate counsellors for working meritoriously and also to encourage them to continue to put in their best in carrying out their duties, Mrs Abosede implored the counsellors to always wear a positive attitude when discharging their duties, because they are laying the foundation upon which their pupils will build their future.

She therefore encouraged them to embrace a positive atmosphere at work and always leave personal challenges behind, as this, according to her, will serve as a string of hope to the children that there is light at the end of every tunnel.

Appreciating the counsellors for their contributions in the education sector, most especially during the pandemic-induced lockdown when they had to sacrifice their comfort to check on the pupils at their various homes, LASUBE Executive Chairman, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King, stated that the advocacy and sensitisation programmes organised by the counsellors during the pandemic helped in reducing the contraction rate of COVID-19 in pupils and mitigated cases of gender violence, child molestation, and other related social vices during the lockdown.

Alawiye-King urged them not to rest on their oars, but continue to exhibit professionalism with a sense of responsibility and commitment to their duties at their various schools.

He said, “One thing that is unique about your calling is that you are professionals, and as professionals, you are expected to behave in a certain manner because you are guided by rules and regulations.”

Highlight of the end-of-the-year get-together was the award of excellence to deserving counsellors as a pat on the back for their selfless service.
