The police on Monday arraigned a 46-year-old man, Atinaro Opeyemi, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged breach of peace and assault.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of breach of peace and assault.
The prosecutor, Inspector Monica Ikebuilo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 13 at about 3:05 p.m at Olora Street, in Ado-Ekiti.
She alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by having in his possession a broken beer bottle, while a political party meeting was going on at Olora lane.
Ikebuilo also alleged that the defendant harmed one Mrs Adedoyin Folasade with the broken bottle, leaving her with deep cut on her left cheek at the party meeting.
Noting that the offences contravened Section 249(D) and 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012, the prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable her to study the case file and present her witnesses.
Pleading not guilty to the charges preferred against him, the defendant, through his lawyer, Mr Anjorin Olarewaju, urged the court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adefumike Anoma, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum, insisting that one of the sureties must be a civil servant of Grade Level 15 cadre.
She thereafter adjourned the case until August 16 for hearing.
