Popular Nigerian actor and broadcaster, Sadiq Daba is dead.
The ‘Cock Crow At Dawn thespian breathed his last on Wednesday, March 3rd, aged 90 years.
NTA2 Lagos Network Centre, in a tweet, said that Daba died on Wednesday evening around 8:30pm, after battling leukaemia and cancer for years.
Daba was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2017, and later prostate cancer, for which he underwent several treatments.
In 2019, billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, paid the hospital bills of the actor cum broadcaster.
Daba, who was originally from Kano in North Central Nigeria, grew up in Freetown, Sierra Leone; before moving back home to Nigeria at the gate of 15.
In Sierra Leone, he attended primary school and St. Edward’s Secondary School; and on return to Nigeria acquired higher degrees in many institutions, including: Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.
His dream of becoming a broadcaster while growing up got a boost in 1968, when he met a certain Alifa Baba Hammed, who found him impressive and arranged for an audition at the Radio Television, Kaduna.
Daba worked as a news anchor, reporter and editor at RKTV, NTPC Lagos and NTA Lagos.
On the other hand, his acting career came to prominence in the late 1970s, starring in the now rested popular television farms, Cockcrow at Dawn.
Daba also featured in a lot of other films and soap operas like ‘Behind the Clouds,’ ‘A Place Like Home,’ ‘Soweto,’ and ‘Moment of Truth.’
He won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as “Inspector Waziri” in Kunle Afolayan’s October 1 in 2015. He last acted in Afolayan’s 2020 movie, ‘Citation’ as Professor Yahaya.
Married to Bolaji Daba, the late broadcaster and actor was survived by two children and grandchildren.
