As part of its efforts to ensure that re-opening of schools across Ogun State achieve the desired results for efficient academic performance at improving the standard of education, the state government has trained public secondary school principals, vice-principals and other school managers on good leadership trait as well as orientate them on the ‘new normal’.
Speaking at the official opening of a three-day Pre-Resumption Education Summit, tagged: “Goodbye Yesterday,” organised by the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, through MicrosoftTeams, the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, described the training as a remarkable and wonderful initiative that boarders on human capacity development.
Salako-Oyedele said, “Now in this new phase of school re-opening, we have to look at what we have on ground, how we can adapt to it and also to see how to ensure that teaching and learning of our children continues, while keeping them safe.
“In order to meet the social distancing requirements in schools, we have been compelled to stagger learning, especially in our public primary and secondary schools, so that we can have more space for the children.”
Special Adviser, SA, to the state governor on Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, while emphasizing on the importance of the programme, said that the training would go a long way to improve the skills of the participants.
Earlier, while welcoming participants to the training, the Permanent Secretary designate, Ogun State TESCOM, Mr. Johnson Odeyemi, appreciated the Dapo Abiodun led-administration for creating enabling environment for effective teaching and learning; adding that secondary school leadership needed to be acquainted with new ways of doing things, including methods of managing both human and material resources in schools, as well as methods of impacting on learners, hence the need for the training.
Odeyemi enjoined participants to be actively engaged in the various sessions and discussions of the programme, in order to acquire more knowledge and update their administrative and managerial skills needed for school administration.
The resource person, Mr. Rotimi Eyitayo, in his lecture titled: “Leadership: Changing the Mindset and Values,” defined a leader as an individual who is able to inspire willing and conscious followership, insisting that the ultimate goal of a leader is to create and deliver desired change as well as birth and raise leaders out of followers.
