The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calaba, Prof. Florence Obi, yesterday at a media parley with journalists revealed that the institution under her watch attracted over US$200,000 as research grants in the last one year.
Obi made the remarks during the interactive session at the institution’s conference Hall in Calabar, to mark the flag-off of activities marking the golden jubilee celebration of the university.
She stated that researchers from the University of Calabar. had contributed immensely to the development of the society, stressing that six of them are among two over cent of the world’s scientists and researchers.
She stated, “Within the last one year alone, University of Calabar has been able to attract well over US$200,000 in research grants.
“That is they are doing very well otherwise we would not have attracted people funding their researches.
“When you are talking about global researchers in the world, Unucal has about aix of them and this is about 2 per cent of the world’s scientists and researchers.
“This means that our researches are being consumed by the public and some of our researchers also have parents ”
Giving an insight into the 50th anniversary celebrations,the VC stressed that the University of Calabar, established 1975, has matured into a world class institution with a student population of 40,000 and a staff population of 8,000.
The VC stressed that due to dint of hard work, the institution now has 21 academic facilities, with about 123 academic departments, and a college of medical sciences, graduate school, five institutes and four centres.
She enthused, “The over-arching goal of the ceremony is the promotion of excellence and the UNICAL brand.”
