…Police Begin Investigation
By Wole Adedeji, Ilorin
An alleged love affair between a serving police sergeant in the Kwara State Police Command has led to the death of both the police officer and his lover.
News had earlier gone round on Thursday that the bodies of an unknown policeman as well as a lady were found at the Chapel of Redemption area of Agba Dam road in Ilorin very early in the morning.
Residents were said to have contacted police authorities, reporting what they woke up to see in their vicinity as they woke up in the morning.
Speaking officially on the matter, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, said in a statement that at about 8 am on the fateful Thursday,
“information reached the command that a man in police uniform later identified by his uniform and name tag as F/NO 497093, Sergeant Olalere Michael “M,” later known to be attached to 15 PMF, Ilorin, went to Chapel of Redemption, Agba Dam housing estate in Ilorin and shot and killed a yet-to-be-identified lady, then shot himself in the head and died.”
Okasanmi said that immediately the information got to the Command, “the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Paul Odama, dispatched a team of policemen and detectives to the scene, where the corpses were recovered and deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where the bodies were certified dead.”
He added that the Police Command “wishes to state clearly that the deadly incident was an aftermath of love gone sour and that it has nothing to do with police brutality.”
Okasanmi, after clearing the Police Force of a possible negative notion by members of the public over the matter disclosed that investigations into the unfortunate incident was in progress, pointing out that “the report of the investigation will be made public as soon as it is ready.”
Findings by this reporter from the residents the Agba Dam Road area did not yield results. They declined to be quoted, neither would they want to speak much to a journalist.
However, they confessed that the faces of the late lovebirds were familiar in the area, but declined to speak further on whether any of the two resided in the area to the extent that thay
might notice a love-gone sour relationship between them of late that could possibly lead to their death.
