Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Joseph Toby, has revealed that the number of passengers who die during road crashes supersedes the number of drivers who lost their lives during road accidents.

Toby made the remarks while delivering a speech in an interactive session with journalists, shortly after flagging off 2024 ‘Ember’ months’ sensitization campaign in Calabar yesterday.

Speaking on the the theme: ‘Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving,’ the Sector Commander stressed that the campaign organized by the command is to sensitize motorists on how to reduce the number of crashes, if not completely prevent crashes and provide safe motoring environment.

Apart from drunken driving, over speeding and driving with warn out tires, the Sector Commander stated that recklessness on the part of motorists, create distressing environment for travellers and blamed passengers for their indifferences while in a vehicle during travels.

He said, “It is against this backdrop that I am calling for an attitudinal change from motorists to reduce the number of road crashes, if not completely halt the number of crashes.

“On this note, going forward, the Corps is fully committed to its responsibility of educating all road users.

“We believe that by empowering them with the right knowledge, we can reduce road traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

“Relevant stakeholders in road transportation sector are invited to work together with the Corps to address road carnage.

“Motorists are expected to take full responsibility for their actions and inactions on the road by maintaining their vehicles, obeying traffic laws, and other road regulations.

“We must take proactive steps to provide hope, not fear, when using our roads; as the consequences of our actions or inactions will be severe if we fail to address these challenges.”
