Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Chief Niyi Akintola, has said that of all South West governors that he calls, only his state governor, Seyi Makinde, never pick his calls or return them.
He said that other governors either pick his call or call back.
Chief Akintola stated this on Sunday, while speaking on a radio programme tagged ‘Political Circuit,’ aired live in a private radio station in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The SAN-turned politician, who was one of those who contested for the gubernatorial ticket of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Oyo State in the 2019 general election, and was the last to step down for the eventual candidate of the party, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, stated that most times he calls the incumbent governor of Oyo State, the governor would not pick his call.
Explaining that he does not call the governor for favours or government contracts, but to advise him, the renowned lawyer added that whenever he calls other South West governors, they either pick up immediately or call him back.
Among those governors he said either pick his call or call him back are the governors of Osun and Ondo states, Gboyega Oyetola and Rotimi Akeredolu, respectively.
Akintola accused Makinde of practising populist agenda in rhe fight against COVID-19 in Oyo State, stating that a governor should be able to take tough decisions instead of always trying to please the people.
Berating Governor Makinde for the failure of his administration to enforce social distancing rule in Oyo State, Akintola advised governments to be prepared for post COVID-19 era, suggesting that since revenue is dropping, governments should reduce the number of political aides.
He warned against over-burdening the populace through tax increment.
