The Nasarawa State Urban Development Board, NUDB, yesterday said it would begin the demolition of illegal structures erected across the state.

Consequently, the NUDB said it has marked over 200 illegal structures erected in Lafia, the state capital for demolition.

The Managing Director of the NUDB, Ahmed Wada, disclosed this to journalists in Lafia, shortly after the completion of a sensitisation tour of the state capital by the board, preparatory to the enforcement of its guidelines for building of structures in the state.

He continued that prior to the planned demolition of the illegally built structures in the state capital, the board had given three notices to owners of the illegal structures to formalise their ownership and approval for those structures erected.

The NUDB MD added that during the enforcement exercise of the board, hawkers on the streets of all the urban centres in the state would be relocated to designated and approved markets, even as illegal structures in those urban centres would also be clamped down.

He said, “Illegal motor parks operating across the state will be clamped down. Buildings blocking water ways and obstructing movement of human and their property will also be viewed seriously to pave the way for a conducive environment.

“The NUDB will assemble its team of mobile court officials during the board’s enforcement exercise, where defaulters will be judged and awarded punitive measures accordingly.

“Thereafter the Lafia enforcement exercise, the NUDB will be in Karu with its mobile court officials to enforce same. Hitherto, those vendors hawking on the shoulders of Keffi – Abuja highway are to relocate to a free market provided by the state government at the Muhammadu Buhari International Market, Karu.”
