As parts of its effort to improve literacy levels in public primary schools in the Centre of Excellence, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, and Universal Learning Solutions, ULS, has organised an intensive training for 60 Jolly Phonics teachers in public primary schools and Quality Assurance Officers in Lagos State.

The training, which began with 60 selected Jolly Phonics teachers and Quality Assurance Officers in attendance on February 11, 2021 at the LASUBEB Board Room in Maryland, Ikeja, is aimed at providing pupils with the requisite skills of effective reading and writing in the classroom.

The training also seeks to train the trainees, how the selected teachers under the programme will work with Quality Assurance Officers to mentor and provide teaching support for other Jolly Phonics teachers in the state.

The Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King, revealed that the workshop is to empower the teachers with necessary skills that are in line with modern techniques of literary teaching methodology.

Noting that learning begins with reading, handwriting and comprehension, Alawiye-King added that the training will enlighten teachers on how pupils can learn to read and write easily with phonetics.

While encouraging the participants to take advantage of the training, the LASUBEB boss urged them to make it resourceful and impactful at their various schools.

Lagos State Project Co-ordinator for Universal Learning Solutions, Hadiza Yunusa, explained that Jolly Phonics is a fun and interactive teaching tool that uses the synthetic phonics literacy teaching methodology, adding that synthetic phonics provides children with the skills needed to read and write.
