The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, has organized a five-day capacity workshop, under the Y2017/2018 Teacher Professional Development, TPD, for Early Childhood Care Development Teachers, themed: ‘Application of Reggio Emilia Jewel and Other Approaches in Early Years Education.’

The training, which commenced on February 8, 2021, is designed to prepare teachers in effectively handling of children at early stages in preparation for other classes and also to meet children’s multiple needs in the aspect of health, nutrition and psycho-social stimulation.

The Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Hon Wahab Alawiye-King, represented by the Permanent Board Member in charge of Special Projects, Hon. Adebayo Adefuye, explained that the workshop is aimed at training teachers on the best method to handle children at first entrance of school at their early stage.

He stated that the training, which is in line with the third pillar of the THEMES Agenda, (Education and Technology) of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will help identify the need to cover all the milestones in the development of the child and also prepare them ahead for upper classes.

Alawiye-King said, “They say first impression last longer, these children from the early years must have an impression that they must do well while they are still in the first stage of learning.”

Head of Early Childhood Care Development Special Education Unit, Mrs. Hilda Twins, noted that the key focus of the training is to train teachers on the use of abandoned and disposable items, such as disposable plates, clays and bottles for instructional materials in the classroom.

She said, “They will be sensitized on how to come down to the level of the children in the classroom for them to be able to assimilate and also improve learning impact in the pupils.”

Stating that classroom managers will also be trained on learning corners, such as the cognitive learning corners, Home Pretends corner, Books and Story Telling corners, Mrs Twins added that they will also be enlightened on how to collaborate with parent in handling their wards.
