By Wole Adedeji, Ilorin

The Kwara State government has banned street begging in Ilorin, the state capital.

Making this known in Ilorin, the state capital, the state Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Abosede Aremu, said that the government took the bold step in view of the nuisance that street begging constitutes on major roads in the metropolis.

Hon Aremu said that her ministry and the Hausa community representatives had signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, on the ban on street begging in Ilorin.

She told residents that there would henceforth be a punishment and penalty for street begging, which attracts a fine or imprisonment, according to Kwara State Street Begging Prohibition Law, 2006.

The Hausa community representatives; Surajudeen Hussain, Rufai Sanni and Mohammed Lawal, assured the state government of their cooperation to get Ilorin streets free of beggars.
