A Junior Secondary School, JSS, student in Ilorin, Kwara State, who along with others went to swim in a local stream has drowned and died.

The late student, whose name was unknown at the time of filing this report, and others were students of Gbagba Junior Secondary School, who sneaked out of the school to swim in Gbagba river.

An eyewitness, who spoke with journalists, said he was within the vicinity and saw the students swimming, but suddenly heard them screaming, which prompted him to rush to the river side.

The man, who identified himself as Mutiu, said on getting there, he observed that one of them had drowned, while the rest of them frightfully had taken to their heels when they discovered that their friend was helplessly in the river.

Mallam Mutiu said that when he and others who were also attracted to the scene got there, they saw the lifeless body of the student and pulled him out, but he had died.

His words, “We saw no fewer than six of the Gbagba Secondary School students at the river; suddenly we heard loud screaming, upon rushing down, we discovered that one of the students had drowned in the river.

“Before we could rescue him, he had already died and we saw wounds on his head, which suggested that the deceased hit his head on the rock.”

Kwara Police spokesman, Ajayi Okasanmi, SP, when contacted said someone had called to inform him about the incident in the afternoon, adding that no official report had been made.

However, Okasanmi said the police have commenced investigations and would get to the root of the unfortunate incident.
