…Accuses Him Of Abuse Of Office, Fraud, Unlawful Acts

The Polytechnic, Ibadan chapter of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, has passed a vote of no confidence in the chairman of the institution’s Governing Board, Prof Adekunle Akinyemi.

The NASU also accused Professor Akinyemi of abusing his office, without caring for the welfare of the staff of the institution.

This was the outcome of an emergency congress of the Ibadan Polytechnic NASU, held at the institution’s sports pavilion on Wednesday, February 2.

The NASU accused Akinyemi of personalizing official issues, threatening to sack the chairman of Ibadan Poly NASU, Comrade Akande Ibraheem Adekunle, over labour-related issues.

The allegations were contained in letter to the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, referenced NASU/POLYIB/VOL.II/01/207, signed by the NASU Chairman and Secretary, Comrades Adekunle and Rahamony O. Alimi, respectfully, copied to the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly; the Chairman, House Committee on Education and the Rector, Ibadan Polytechnic; and made available to CompassNG, enumerated the various financial and official infractions levelled against Prof Akinyemi.

Among sundry allegations, which culminated in the passing vote of no confidence in the governing board chiarman are: personalizing official issues, which the union said was negating the spirit of dialogue on union matters; turning himself into regular staff of the Polytechnic, resuming everyday and operating like the institution’s Rector, a development which it claimed negated his appointment and extant regulations of the Polytechnic; appropriation of powers beyond and outside the purview of his office to himself, caring less about staff welfare.

Other accusations include: allegedly planning to buy a N50 million naira official car for himself from the internally generated revenue, IGR, of the institution, at a time the state government was struggling to pay salaries as and when due, without considering that management was owing some staff allowances; and collection of N100,000 monthly fuel allowance for his car, apart from the perquisites of his office, which the union said was “tantamount to fraudulent act.”

Prof Akinyemi was further alleged by the union to have single-handedly changed the existing security architecture on ground in the Polytechnic, without due consultation with relevant stakeholders, and has since brought in Aso Guards Security, claiming that the institution has witnessed series of security breaches and unrest since he brought in the new security outfit.

The last straw that broke the camel’s back was Prof Akinyemi’s threat to sack the NASU chairman,  Comrade Adekunle, over union related matter, a development which the union described a “gross abuse if office.”

The letter further reads, “In view of the above allegations, the congress decided to pass vote of no confidence in the Chiarman of the Governing Council, Prof Akinyemi, for his unlawful acts, abuse of office and fraudulent act.”

The NASU called on the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology to look into the allegations, with a view to treating them with the required urgency to forestall industrial crisis in the institution.
