The House of Representatives’ Committee on Customs has asked the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to suspend banks owing the service from further collection of duties until their debts have been cleared.

Chairman of the committee, Leke Abejide, gave the stoppage order yesterday at a session between members of the committee and representatives of the banks collecting duties on behalf of Customs.

Hon Abejide said that investigations conducted so far by the committee revealed that five banks collectively owe the NCS about N10 billion.

The lawmakers revealed that debts were duties collected by the debtor banks on behalf of the NCS and have yet to be remitted to the accounts of Customs.

Abejide stressed that an agreement has been reached with the NCS to ensure the implementation of the decision of the committee.
