Senators elected under the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, are demanding that President Muhammadu Buhari wakes up to his responsibility of securing the lives and properties of Nigerians.

This was just as the lawmakers, including Remi Tinubu, under the aeigis of Southern Senators Forum, SSF, expressed shock at the assassination of a chieftain of the APC and former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, while charging security agencies to go after the perpetrators and bring them to face the law.

A senator from Ekiti State, who is also the chairman of the SSF, Opeyemi Bamidele, conveyed the senators’ worry in a condolence message titled: ‘Stop the Drift to Anarchy.’

The message said, “We receive the sudden demise of our brother and friend, Ahmed Gulak, by unknown gunmen with shock and heavy hearts.

“This was more of a national calamity, taking cognisance of the de-tribalistic nature of the deceased, who believed in building bridges across ethnic lines by his interactions and association.”

They argued that had the President has not been alive to his responsibility, maintaining, “We condemn a situation whereby Nigerians are no longer safe in virtually every part of our country in totality.

“The kernel for the existence of any government is to guarantee the safety of lives and property of the citizens, and the present government of President Buhari must be alive to this bidding.”

Noting that as enshrined in the “statute book, we believe that every Nigerian carrying out legitimate businesses in any part of the country should undertake such with the guarantee of safety, and Nigeria shouldn’t fail in this regard.”

The senators further insisted that the perpetrators of “this heinous crime” have again brought Nigeria to a “calamitous situation” and should be nabbed.

They added, “The 51 senators from the Southern part of the country expressed our heartfelt condolences to Ahmed Gulak’s friends, family, confidants, people, and government of Adamawa State and the entire Nigerians on the death of this notable politician.

“Although the situation surrounding his death was callous and painful, they should take it with what the holy book established that Allah gives and takes.”
