A non-governmental organization, NGO, the Youth Advocacy Initiative, YAI, has commended the Lagos State governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for his thoughtfulness in reducing the tuition fees for fresh students of the state owned university, the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo.
In a statement made available to the press, the group’s Convener, Comrade Adekunle Akinde, said that Governor Sanwo-Olu has once again demonstrated his characteristic of being a listening administrator to the plight of his people, adding that the development has further endeared him to the people that gave him the mandate to be their governor in 2019.
The good news of the reduction in fees payable by new students of the state-owned higher institution was relayed to the public at the weekend on behalf of the governor by His Special Adviser on Education, Tokunbo Wahab, who said the reduction in the fees as approved by the governor was in tandem with his commitment to provision of qualitative education at an affordable to all and sundry, irrespective of social class, political leaning, religious sentiment or ethnic consideration.
YAI’s leader expressed the delight thatbthe governor has not relented in walking his talk about his electioneering promises on fulfilment of his administration’s education agenda, adding that, the move would further stem likely restiveness on the campus and ensure a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Recall that LASU students had earlier protested the hike in tuition fees by the institution’s authorities that increased the tuition fees for fresh students by 168 per cent increase; from N25,000 to N67,048.50; calling for the immediate reversal of the decision within two weeks.
The NGO therefore called on the affected stakeholders to support and cooperate with the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to encourage him to do more for the people in all the sectors for the good of the people, praising the governor for his usual prompt intervention in matters that requires urgent attention.
The group further reiterated its members’ support for Sanwo-Olu and his administration in his effort at ensuring good governance for the good people of Lagos State, enthusing that, “the way he is going, his second year in office would be better than his first year on the saddle, because his eyes remain fixedly on the ball.”
