Cases of incessant labour issues and disputes may soon be resolved through a tinker with the labour laws by the Federal Government.
Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, disclosed this, saying that the laws would be made to be more effective and efficient on both sides of the matter.
Keyamo said this in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, during a two-day working visit to the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, MINILS.
The minister said that the labour laws, particilarly, the one establishing MINILS and others in the country had become outdated.
His words, “Some labour centres are not represented in the governing council of the institute, so we are trying to amend all the labour laws in the country.
“We are going to amend that of this institute so that all the labour centres will be represented.
“The MINILS Law was an old one. It was a decree that was adopted later as an act of the parliament.
“At that time, Trade Union Congress, TUC, was not in existence. We are not unmindful of the lack of balance in the constitution of the Governing Council.”
Agreeing that high-wire politics in the appointment of the head of the MINILS had brought the institute to its knees, Keyamo said, “I agree with the notion of building strong institutions, but I want to say that personalities also make institutions, hence the best decision I made was recommending Comrade Issa Aremu to head this place.”
He also said it was open secret that before now, there were some issues on the campus of the institute, pointing out that henceforth, such issues would be taken cognizance of in appointing the Director General of MINILS.
