As the campaign for the 2022 Ekiti State gubernatorial election hots up, a group, Ekiti for Good Governance, EGG, has revealed that the Ekiti State chapter of the Social Democratic Party, SDP and its gubernatorial candidate, Engr Segun Oni, are facing serious difficulties in raising funds for the election.

Coordinator of the group, Adeolu Alofe, on Thursday said that due to the rejection witnessed by Engr Oni and his campaign team, the Ekiti State chapter of the SDP is in a dire strait on how to source funds to run the campaigns.

Alofe said that available information from the SDP’s recent strategy meeting in Ado Ekiti, indicated that there was a major setback as the hope of sourcing campaign funds from public coffers were dashed.

Alofe noted that “the SDP gubernatorial candidate expects the national body of the SDP to provide funds for his campaign.

“The party leaders are in serious difficulties and dilemma on how to source funds to run the Segun Oni gubernatorial campaign. Some bigwigs of the party at the national level expect that the candidate, having bought the ticket with millions of naira, should have the financial capacity and muscle to run his campaign without necessarily depending on the SDP at national.

“With the candidate’s expectation that the party will fund his campaign dashed, it is now clear that they are at crossroads and the chickens have come home to roost.

“It is now clear to the members of the SDP, who were deceived into believing that their gubernatorial candidate has a ring of stupendous wealthy people who will finance the campaign, that such expectation is all a mirage, a 419 packaging, and that they entered a ‘one chance’ bus.

“As we approach the June 18, 2022 gubernatorial election, the electorate are becoming more conscious and aware of the deceitful nature of the SDP candidate and they have started wondering why he had gone to crowdfunding platform to raise money.”
