The senator representing Lagos East senatorial district in the 9th National Assembly, Senator Tokunbo Mikhail Abiru, has congratulated his constituents especially and Nigerians in general as the nation commemorate this year:s edition of June 12, designated as Democracy Day.

Arguing that many might be quick to dismiss the commemoration of Democracy Day as non-event, especially considering the myriad of challenges plaguing our nation, Senator Abiru, however averred that “when we reflect on the tortuous struggles to reclaim the nation from the military jackboot and many of our compatriots who paid the ultimate price for the restoration of civil rule in Nigeria, the day should not pass uncelebrated.”

According to the distinguished Senator, the imperfections and challenges in our nation are not enough for us to throw our hands up in despair, instead, we should continue to seek ways of consolidating on the gains of democracy in Nigeria.

He said, “Every great nation today at one time or the other have had their moments of turmoil. They overcame because leaders and other fellow country men and women believed in their country.”

Insisting that growing agitations for breakaways threatening our nation’s should cease in the interest of peace, Senator Abiru averred that going by the contributions at the public hearings on the amendments of the 1999 Constitution that were concluded recently, the National Assembly is committed to constitutional reforms that will ensure an equitable and fair Nigeria that works for all.

He called on Nigerians youth to shun all calls for violent agitations that could further worsen the dire strait that Nigeria is in, adding that public infrastructure are our collective assets.

He added, “Jobs and economic opportunities don’t thrive in a chaotic and tense atmosphere.

“Like I have always said, ‘Our challenges are daunting but not insurmountable.’

“Let’s keep hope alive. Nigeria shall be great again!”
