A retired professor of science education at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Prof Duro Ajeyalemi, has died of complications from COVID-19.

The former Dean of Students’ Affairs, Ajeyalemi, who is also the immediate past registrar of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, JUPEB, was said to have died on Wednesday at an isolation centre in Lagos.

The professor retired from UNILAG in 2020, after clocking 70 years of age.

This tragedy is coming less than 72 hours after the death of the institution’s former Vice Chancellor, Oye Ibidapo-Obe, who also died from COVID-19 complications.

Ibidapo-Obe, a professor of systems engineering, reportedly died of COVID-19 complications in an undisclosed hospital.

On Tuesday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, recorded a total of 1,354 new COVID-19 cases across 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Since the advent of the pandemic on February 27, 2020 in Lagos, Nigeria has recorded a total of 92,705 positive cases with 1,319 fatalities.
