The Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, has described an interim injunction restraining him from contesting the primary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as an attempt by fifth columnists to destabilise the party.

Speaking through his spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, Obaseki noted that opponents of the PDP were already jittery about the massive support the party is receiving from the people against their expectations.

According to him, the opponents are fighting an already lost battle, despite the mechanism adopted, adding, “The court order was obtained last night. Our opponents outside the party are trying to use fifth columnists within us to replicate the chaos in their party.”

Maintaining that the oppositions are indeed threatened by the mass acceptance of the governor by the people, despite the undue underplays by opponents, he added, “They are worried about the popularity and acceptance of the PDP and our amiable governor so much that they have become desperate in their quest to stop a contest they know they will lose.”

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, is embroiled in a leadership tussle from state to federal level with three factions having three different acting National Chairmen, following the decision of the Appeal Court to uphold the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshimohole, and the last is yet to be heard.

Expressing confidence that he will get justice, as his legal team are marshalling the facts of the matter before the court, Obaseki used the medium to appeal to the people of the state, his supporters, and members of the PDP, to remain calm and law-abiding, in order to earn a faultless victory in the forthcoming governorship election.
