The Lagos State government has expressed heartfelt appreciation to individuals and organisations that have heeded its call for support for victims of the Abule-Ado-Soba explosion of March 15, in which no fewer than 20 people lost their lives and property worth billions of naira destroyed.
Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during an on-the spot-assessment visit to the explosion site and adjoining areas, to assess the extent of carnage, had set up a N2 billion Emergency Relief Fund to provide relief and succour for the victims of the fire incident and immediately released N250 million towards the cause.
Since the setting up of the Emergency Relief Fund, state governments and corporate organisations have donated to the relief fund. The Nigerian Governors’ Forum has donated N200 million while Dangote Group and Zenith Bank have contributed N100 million each to the Fund.
Sanwo-Olu also set up a fact finding committee, headed by the Lagos State deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, to determine the cause of the explosion and proffer recommendations to prevent a re-occurrence. The committee, given two weeks to submit its report will soon complete its assignment.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State government, while thanking donors to the fund so far, also solicits further support from wealthy and well-meaning individuals, as well as private and public institutions, to rebuild the community because the financial resources required to restore Abule-Ado-Soba are enormous.
