Ahead of 2023, a pro-democracy organization, Campaign for Dignity in Governance, CDG, has told the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, BOS, to show interest ina second term in office against 2023 governorship poll or be prepared to contend with a mega rally that will compel him to do so without further delay.
The group, which consists of over 70 other rights organizations made this call after its periodic congress in Lagos at the weekend, where the governor was urged to do the needful now before a mammoth crowd of over 500,000 protesters would storm the Lagos streets to call him out to assure them of his interest to serve the good people of the state for another term in office, commencing from May 29, 2023.
Speaking with newsmen after the congress, the CDG National President, Comrade Razaq Olokoba, made it abundantly clear that “we are not unaware that it is not yet time for proper declaration of intention, what we are expecting him to do is, at least, show the people that he would do the needful at the fullness of time.”
Speaking further, Olokoba said, “As a law abiding citizen of the country, we know Sanwo-Olu will not jump the gun and act contrary to the laid down rule and regulation, but what we are expecting from him is the assurance that he will not let the people down by not showing interest. In this matter, ordinary body language cannot convince us sufficiently.”
The youthful rights activist insisted that “Sanwo-Olu’s outstanding performance since his election in 2019 is what we want to appreciate by canvassing support for his second term in office, which we believe would be to the benefit of the generality of the people of Lagos and beyond.”
Olokoba further assured that “we have the capacity to mobilise a minimum of half a million pro-Sanwo-Olu protesters to lay siege to his office, Government House and major ministries.”
Olokoba said, “If it is the constitutional right of the governor to decide not to show interest, it is equally a constitutional right of the citizenry to ask for what they deserve under the law through peaceful rallies and protests,” stressing that “Governor Sanwo-Olu, being who he is as a listening and compassionate administrator, would heed the call of patriotism to show interest in next year’s governorship election, which we can assure him, he will win.”
In conclusion, the renowned public commentator said, “Our members are already mobilising and sensitizing the public about the impending mega rally and they are itching to move,” assuring that, the rally would be so peaceful and orderly that neither government works nor public commercial activities would be disrupted.”
